MARCUS WHITMAN CONSTRUCTED AN IRRIGATION DITCH DIVERTING WATER FROM THE WALLA WALLA RIVER INTO A LOW AREA OF THE NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY. THIS CREATED A POND THAT WAS USED TO POWER A GRISTMILL. THE EXACT LOCATION OF THIS SITE IS UNKNOWN; THEREFORE THE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE COORDINATES OF THIS SITE WERE DIGITIZED CLOSE TO THE CENTER OF WHITMAN MILL POND'S SOUTHERN EDGE. THE WATER NOW FLOWING THROUGH THE POND IS DIVERTED FROM DOAN CREEK.
