| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | The Mancos River is the only perennial stream in Mesa Verde National Park, flowing along the east boundary of the park from north to south for 4.68 miles. Water samples were collected from the Mancos River about 500 feet upstream of the NPS gaging station. Prior to recent catastrophic wildfires at Mesa Verde the Mancos River supported an intact native fish population (blue head sucker, flannelmouthed sucker, speckled dace, and roundtail chub). Since the fires, the fish have all but disappeared. The river supports an important and functional riparian zone providing wildlife habitat, food chain support, streambank stability and flood attenuation. Agricultural and industrial activities occur currently or have occurred historically in the Mancos River watershed. |
