The location and data for this spring originate from a 1902 U.S. Senate Document (282) entitled The Hot Springs of Arkansas: Report of an Analysis of the Waters of the Hot Springs on the Hot Springs Reservation; Hot Springs; Garland County; Arkansas by J.K. Haywood (Head of USDA Laboratory of Insecticides and Agricultural Waters of the Bureau of Chemistry) and Walter Harvey Weed (USGS). Some of the spring numbers and names were given by J.K. Haywood and Martin Eisele an early Superintendent of Hot Springs National Park. Station is described as: Big Iron Spring "Not visible. Comes from under bottom of tufa cliff 5 to 6 feet below the present (1902) surface of the ground."
