MonitoringLocationDescriptionText Fossil Gulch Pond Well (T6S R12E 36DDA) is located in the middle section of the Bell Rapids Plateau, next to the Bell Rapids Irrigation District canal, about two meters from a pressurizing pumping station on the canal and thirty meters from one of the Bell Rapids Irrigation District irrigation ponds. The well is privately owned and serves as a water supply to potato cellars and a condemned Quonset hut, both 0.8 kilometers (1/2 mile) from the well. The cellars are 0.8 kilometers east of the well and the house is 0.8 kilometers west of the well. Throughout the study there were electrical problems experienced with the pump. When the pump was working, a hose was connected to a water line inside the pump house that connects from the pump and tank to feed the cellar and the house. This line had a valve outside the pump house to which a garden hose can be hooked to allow water to flow for sampling. IF the pump was on during sampling, then water was drafted from the hose for a much shorter time, enough to empty the pressure tank in the pump house. When the pump was off, flow time was much greater. When the pump was not working due to electrical problems, then samples were retrieved using a one liter bailer. During the irrigation season when the canal was flowing, water samples were also taken from the canal near the concrete slab. Since the shut down of irrigation (last irrigation in October 2004 and sold water rights in June 2005), the water level of this well has dropped 0.6 meters a month. This location is assumed to be a recharge source area of the Shoestring basalt flow aquifer.
