| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | Cottonwood Creek drains the western side of Horseshoe Mesa and has three major branches in its upper reaches. The eastern branch, which abuts Horseshoe Mesa, is almost always dry. The central branch has perennial flow in places, and the USGS maintains a streamflowgaging station (station number 09402450) on this branch about 150 m upstream from the confluence with the eastern branch. There is a small seep in the western branch near the base of the Bright Angel Shale. Water in the central branch discharges from channel alluvium about 80 m upstream from the streamflow gaging station during most of the year. Several springs and seeps discharge from the Temple Butte Formation and Muav Limestone near the head of this branch. The water sample for Cottonwood Creek No. 1 was collected about 100 m downstream from the gaging station. The discharge was measured near the sample site. The sample site is within the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park. Large Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) trees and aquatic plant species are present at the site. The USGS site ID is 360128111591200. In his M.S. thesis Jeremiah Kobor identified this site as Discharge Station 6. |
