MonitoringLocationDescriptionText THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE AMITYVILLE NY 7.5 MINUTE SERIES (TOPOGRAPHIC) QUADRANGLE AND IS OUTSIDE OF FIRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE (FIIS) BOUNDARIES. THE SITE IS AT THE CHANNEL BETWEEN SAND AND GILGO ISLAND IN THE GREAT SOUTH BAY OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. SEDIMENT QUALITY DATA WERE COLLECTED AT THIS SITE ON 10 SEPTEMBER 1977 USING CORE TUBES APPROXIMATELY 12 METERS IN LENGTH AND 6.5 CENTIMETERS IN DIAMETER. WATER TEMPERATURES AND PH MEASUREMENTS WERE ALSO TAKEN AT THIS SITE. DATA ARE SUMMARIZED IN A JANUARY 1978 MASTER OF SCIENCE THESIS TITLED "A STUDY OF THE QUALITY AND SENSITIVITY OF THE SEDIMENTS AND WATER OF A SELECTED AREA OF WESTERN GREAT SOUTH BAY AS A FUNCTION OF HEAVY METAL ACCUMULATION" BY MICHAEL SANFILIPPO; ADELPHI UNIVERSITY.
