| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | This segment begins at an elevation of about 6480 feet, just below the Vidae Falls Picnic area and extends for approximately 0.75 kilometers downstream to the confluence of Vidae Creek at 6280 feet in elevation. The segment has a moderate to high gradient, the channel is 23 meters wide and is on average 10 cm in depth. The stream is found in a shallow low sloping valley. A relatively open fir overstory is found on the slopes and in the stream riparian area. Understory vegetation is sparse. Stream banks have a high rock content and are covered with moss and herbaceous vegetation to the waterline. Logs have stepped the stream at 1015 meter intervals, creating cascade steps and shallow plunge pools. There is considerable storage of gravel behind these steps. Between steps, gravel runs, sand gravel pools and cobblerubble riffles occur in approximately equal proportions. Where cobbles are found they are partially embedded in sand/gravel. Aquatic mosses cover lees than 5% of the bottom areas and are found on larger cobbles and logs. An encrusting algae is found in moderate abundance on larger, more stable substrates. A kicknet sample in erosional habitats was taken at 6300 feet, along with hand picking collections along the entire length of this segment. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
