| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | This is a short segment about 0.25 kilometers in length, which begins at 6280 feet in elevation at the confluence of Vidae Creek, and extends downward to 6200 feet. Vidae Creek adds substantially to the flow of Sun Creek. The channel is now about 3 m wide and 1015 cm deep. The stream is higher gradient in this segment and possesses more power and increased flow. There are fewer of the complete cross channel steps created by logs, and less storage of gravel behind log steps. Riffle cascade habitats and cobble/rubble substrates are dominant. Cobbles are highly embedded in sand and gravel. There is an occasional short bedrock chute or falls to be found along this segment. Aquatic moss is common on larger, more stable rock tops. At about 6230 feet in elevation there is a wetland and seep system on a bench on the west bank, about 1 meter above the stream channel. This perched wetland is about 6 m wide by 30 m long. There is a dense grassherbaceous cover on the saturated wetland soils, and moss is abundance along channels draining this wetland. Several caddisfly, mayfly, and stonefly taxa were taken in handpicked collections, though overall taxa richness and abundance appeared to be low. At 6220 feet there is a similar, but smaller wetland seep on the west bank. Kick net and handpick samples were taken at 6240 feet in elevation. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
