| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | This segment begins at the base of the talus slope (6100 ft) and extends for about 0.75 km to 5860 feet in elevation. The channel in this segment has cut down about 10 meters into a sloping plateau of porous volcanic soils, to form a narrow, Vshaped valley. This valley gradually deepens downstream from the base of the talus slope. At 5970 feet the stream swings against the east ridge. For several 100 meters, a talus slope at the base of the east ridge, forms the east bank of the stream. The channel in this segment receives moderate to dense shading from a nearly closed canopy fir forest, and from the valley and ridge slopes. Understory vegetation is sparse on valley slopes. There is dense growth of herbs and moss on the channel margin only. Banks are stabilized by a high rock content, augmented by roots and moss/herb cover. The stream gradient is moderate. The channel averages 3 meters in width. Riffle habitat dominates and riffles are broken occasionally with short cascades about every 50 meters. Substrates in the riffles are a mixture of large gravel, cobbles and rubble, that are about 50% embedded in sand/fine gravel. Log deflectors create some slow eddies on the margins with sand/fine gravel substrates. Aquatic moss is restricted to the larger, more stable rubble. Kicknet and hand pick samples were taken at 5970 feet. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
