| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | Below 5800 feet, the stream gradient steepens and the channel swings away from the east ridge, back into the middle of the low sloping plateau. The stream has cut a narrow, Vshaped valley down into the porous volcanic soils that fill the entire lower portion of the ancient Sun Creek stream valley. The new, Vshaped valley deepens rapidly, until a depths of 5060 meters are attained. This segment extends for about 9 kilometers within the park, and continues beyond the park boundary. In the upper canyon area, the west slope is mostly open fir forest down to the valley floor, with patches of meadow and also patches of bare, slumping soil. The east slope has a few trees, and only scattered patches of meadow vegetation. Much of the east slope is bare, unstable volcanic soils. The valley floor is 1030 meters wide. The stream channel meanders back and forth across the narrow valley floor. At the base of the east slope, considerable ground water emerges. This creates an almost continuous band of perched wetland meadows, seeps and springs. This band varies from 115 meters wide. The stream is 23 meters wide, and depths average 1520 cm. Banks are 0.51 meter high, rocky, and are densely vegetated with moss/herbs down to about 10 cm above the September 1990 water level. The lower banks are apparently scoured during high spring snowmelt. Habitats consists of primarily continuous, high gradient, cobblerubble riffles. Occasional deflector logs provide some eddy water on the margins, however fast currents predominate even along stream margins. There are a few crosschannel debris jams present, these occur at several 100 meter intervals. Kicknet and hand pick samples were taken at 5600 feet. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
