| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | This station is a short segment extending from 6760 to 6840 feet in elevation. At 6840 feet a low volume 1st order tributary joins the main channel. Also at approximately 6840 feet in elevation there is a low falls, after which the stream channel is narrowly confined at the bottom of a broader, more Vshaped valley. Conifers are found higher on the valley slopes, leaving the stream channel relatively open. This is a moderate gradient segment with almost continuous riffle habitat. There are only limited depositional habitats, mainly in pockets on the stream margin. The channel is 12 m wide and 520 cm deep. Aquatic moss and encrusting algae is nearly absent now, but a diatom dominated periphyton community make the rocks very slick. Stream banks have a dense layer of moss, grass and herbaceous vegetation down to the waterline, bole and branch wood are occasional. At the base of the segment near the 6760 foot elevation mark, a series of 3 seepage areas are located on the west bank. These seep springs are approximately 10 m long and 23 m wide. The springs issue from the base of the west slope. Spring substrates are angular cobble overlying loosely consolidated sandgravel. Semiaquatic moss is common on exposed cobble tops. Encrusting algae is common. These are high gradient, shallow springs, with most of the flow being subsurface. Kicknet and hand pick samples were taken at the bottom of this segment at 6760 feet. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
