New WQX 3.0 profiles are available at waterqualitydata.us/beta/. These profiles will contain recent USGS data added since March 11, 2024, which marks the beginning of limited accessibility for USGS data. Read more about the 3.0 profiles and associated changes here. This user interface only serves WQX2.2 profiles, which do NOT contain USGS data added after March 11, 2024.

MonitoringLocationDescriptionText The station is located on the mainstem of Sand Creek in a segment beginning just after the spring seepage areas at 6760 feet. Here the stream enters a steep, densely wooded canyon. There is a definite break in the geology. The stream channel which had been confined in a shallow valley in a sloping pumice plateau, now enters a deep, Vshaped canyon. There are also two falls in this segment, with reaches of cascade habitat located in talus slope areas at the base of each falls. Falls and cascades continue down to about 6420 feet. Cascade reaches are composed of rubble/boulder substrates. The stream is generally shallow and up to 5 m wide. Pocket water is common, but there are few good plunge pools. Banks are rock (boulder). Fir forest is generally confined to upslope areas of the stream valley, with the canyon bottom being relatively open. Grass and herbaceous vegetation is lush in the riparian area. Semiaquatic moss is common on boulder tops and banks. At the base of the upper falls in this segment, a high gradient 1st order channel joins the main creek. This tributary appears to arise from a spring issuing from a hole in a cliff wall just above the mainstem. There is a waterfall after the spring head, then an approximately 6 meter long talus slope area at the base, before the tributary enters Sand Creek. This talus slope is almost entirely covered by a dense growth of moss and herbaceous vegetation. At 6450 feet there are several seeps on the west bank of Sand Creek. These seeps have a dense herbaceous and shrub cover. At 6440 feet a first order tributary enters from the NNE. This tributary is found in a small, densely forested valley. Opposite from the first order tributary at 6440 feet is a 2550 meter long seepage area on the west bank of Sand Creek. This seep has a dense cover of herbaceous vegetation. A kick net sample was taken at 6460 feet in the cascade habitat of the talus slope at the base of the lower falls. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990.
