| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | Lost Creek Segment 4 is about 1300 meters in length, and traverses an elevation interval of 6040 to 5860 feet. This segment differs from the upper plateau in that the stream gradient is lower. There is no stream valley development here. The channel is cut down about 0.5 to 1.5 meters into loose volcanic soils of the plateau. Banks are steep and often overhang the stream. the stream is more narrowly confined, with widths of 0.30.6 meter being average. Depths range from several cm in shallow rills to 50+ cm in plunge pools below debris jams. The relatively open overstory is dominated by lodgepole pine. A dense understory of herbs and grass is present. Shading from trees, herbs, grass and overhanging banks varies from partial to full. Very little moss is found on the stream banks. Submerged moss exists as scattered clumps on larger bole wood. Glides and riffles account for ca. 80% of the channel length, pools for about 1020% and debris jams for less than 5%. Most of the stream bottom is sand and fine gravel. Only a few short riffles have a coarser gravel substrate. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
