| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | The upper plateau segment of Lost Creek is of moderate gradient and about 400 meters in length. The elevation interval is from 6140 to 6040 feet. It begins at the base of the ridge and traverses a low sloping plateau of loosely consolidated and porous volcanic soils. The channel has cut a shallow valley of about 3 meters depth, that has low sloping side walls. Channel widths range between 0.51 meters and depths are typically shallow in the center of the channel. The forest overstory is in transition along this segment, from the fir, sugar pine, larch dominated ridge area to an open lodgepole pine forest that covers most of the plateau. A low to moderate density of grass and herb vegetation is found in the understory. Glide and riffle habitats dominate (ca. 80% of length), with pools (10%), cascades (5%), and debris jams (5%) also found. The shallow riffles and glides are broken by cascade steps at 15 to 50 meter intervals. There are a few deeper plunge pools below cascade steps. A moderate amount of smaller bole wood is present. Gravel is the dominant substrate in the center of the channel. Gravel grades from coarser particle sizes at the top of the segment to finer sizes (e.g. peagravel size) at the bottom. The station description was based on station visits that occurred during September 1990. |
