THE SITE IS AT CANYON SPRING NEXT TO CANYON CREEK APPROXIMATELY 2.6 MILES NORTH OF THE PONTOTOCJOHNSTON COUNTY BORDER. THE SPRING IS DESCRIBED AS AN "ARTESIAN" SPRING. SAMPLES FOR THE SITE WERE COLLECTED JANUARY 26 1977 DURING A STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (USGS) IN COOPERATION WITH THE OKLAHOMA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (OGS). THE DATA WERE PUBLISHED IN THE 1990 REPORT "HYDROLOGY OF THE ARBUCKLE MOUNTAINS AREA; SOUTHCENTRAL OKLAHOMA" BY ROY W. FAIRCHILD; RONALD L. HANSON; AND ROBERT E. DAVIS. THE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE COORDINATE VALUES FOR THE SITE WERE OBTAINED BY DIGITIZING A POINT THAT MATCHED THE SITE TYPE AND THE SITE'S TOWNSHIP; RANGE; AND QUARTERQUARTERQUARTER SECTION LOCATION (SECSTA1) AS ILLUSTRATED IN FIGURE 2 OF THE REPORT.
