| MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | Access to Lechuguilla Cave is limited to approved scientific researchers, survey and exploration teams, and NPS managementrelated trips. Park natural resources staff have requested that individual station lat/long coordinates for the cave sites be entered under one general location at Latitude 32.1845253 degrees North and Longitude 104.5032903 degrees West. This point does not represent the actual position of the Helictite pool in Pellucidar. Pellucidar is a large high level room above Deep Secrets in the Southwestern Branch of Lechuguilla Cave, approximately 230 meters below the entrance. The room is decorated with active flowstone, dripstone, and cave pearls. Gypsum blocks up to several meters thick cover parts of the limestone floor. The Helictite pool is about 0.6 meter by 1.0 meter in surface area and 2.4 meters deep with a gentle slope of wet white calcite flowstone. The pool is filled to overflowing by a thin film of water flowing over nearby stalactites and flowstone. It is lined with a subaqueous mammillary calcite crust and rimmed by thin shelfstone up to 12 cm wide. Lechuguilla Cave is within the boundaries of Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the site can be found on the Serpentine Bends USGS 1:24000 topographic quadrangle. |
