THE STATION IS ON THE NIOBRARA RIVER INSIDE THE AGATE FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT. THE STATION WAS DOWNSTREAM OF THE HWY 29 BRIDGE. THE RIVER WAS SAMPLED AS PART OF A STUDY ON MACROINVERTEBRATES. THE STUDY; BY BORIS KONDRATIEFF; MEASURED NITRATES; PHOSPHATES; PH; AND OTHER PARAMETERS. THE STUDY; "MACROINVERTEBRATE ASSEMBLAGES AND WATER QUALITY IN SIX NATIONAL PARK UNITS IN THE GREAT PLAINS;" WAS SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. THIS SITE WAS ACTIVE FROM JUNE 1988 TO JUNE 1989 AND WAS MOVED UPSTREAM TO STATION AGFO_BK_1B FOR A MORE SUITABLE SUBSTRATE SAMPLING LOCATION.
