MonitoringLocationDescriptionText | The station is within the boundary of Biscayne Bay National Park and is located south of Black Point 200 feet offshore. The site is a well at a depth of 1 foot beneath the water surface and 17 feet below the substrate surface. The well consists of slotted PVC well screen from a depth of 12 feet to a depth of 17 feet below the ocean floor, attached to enough PVC casing (flush threads) such that 15 to 30 cm of casing protrude from the open hole. Coarse quartz sand is poured into the annulus of the borehole to fill the space between the screen and formation. The sand is too coarse to clog well screen slots and allows unrestricted passage of fluid from the porous limestone to the screen. A slurry of Portland cement is poured down the annulus to fill voids and irregularities in the rock. The cement prevents water in the annulus, higher in the well, from entering the screened zone. Quicksetting hydraulic cement, composed of 1 part molding plaster (plaster of Paris) and 7 parts type II Portland cement is mixed with water to form a stiff ball. The ball of cement is quickly taken to the bottom and handmolded into the annulus around the PVC pipe. Purging is accomplished by fitting a PVC end cap (equipped with 3/4inch 50ftlong, tygon hose) over the 2inchdiameter PVC wellhead. The other end of the hose is attached to a small 12VDC electricpowered rubber impeller pump aboard the boat and the pump, with a discharge rate of approximately 5 gallons/minute, is run for 5 to 10 minutes or until the water runs clear. |
